Watch Out Ladies!

Our little man is such a funny guy.  Conversations from this morning:

I am buttoning up a collared shirt as Will is getting dressed for school.

Will:  Awww, this shirt is bothering me.  It bothers my neck when I do this.  Leans head to the side so that ear is touching shoulder.

Me:  Well, don't do your head like that and then the collar won't bother you.

Will:  Is this a collar?!?!  Am I like a....DOGGIE!

We then go to the bathroom to brush his teeth and hair.  Will sees Brent spray on some body spray.

Will:  Oh Daddy, can I have some of that spray?  Brent does a light spray on his neck.

Will:  And a little on my hand.  Brent complies.

Will:  sniffs his hand  Oh, Ava is gonna love this!  (Ava is his little girlfriend at school!)

A Family Day at the Park

The forecast for today was incredible for February...sunny with highs in the 70s.  So after church, we all dug out our shorts and t-shirts and headed to a local park to enjoy the afternoon.   And, hopefully, get a little color on our white legs!

We spent alot of time at the swings....

And swung like the monkeys that we are....

Climbed on everything that we could....

Took our turns on the slides...

Tried out the log roll...

...and it is alot harder than it looks!

And tried out our new running shoes...

...and they make him run FASTER than Sonic!

We were amazed by the older kids at the skate park...

...and I'm crossing my fingers that this isn't a hobby we become interested in!

My favorite picture of the afternoon....

They fight like brothers, but are really good friends.

At dinner tonight, we were talking about our favorite part of the weekend.  Jack said that spending time together at the park was his favorite!

Happy Weekend!

A Peek at our Week 2011: Week 8

Saturday, February 19

While Brent was at the office working on a major deadline and the boys were outside enjoying the spring-like weather, I pulled out my accountant hat and completed our taxes.  A necessary evil, and glad that it's done!

Sunday, February 20

At Jack's school, the middle school students choose to be in chorus or band.  Each year, the chorus goes on tour in a European country (Ireland & Italy have been past trips).  For some reason at dinner tonight,  Jack and I were talking about which one he thought he might like to do in a few years.  I said to Jack, "You should be in chorus so that I can go on the trips as a chaperone!"  Jack replied that he thought he wanted to be in the band.  Brent's advice centered on "which one gets the most girls?"  And without missing a beat, Will replied, "Me!"

Monday, February 21

Both boys were out of school today for the President's Day holiday, so we went to the gym this morning then to Chick-fil-A to eat and play.  Jack ordered the Chick-fil-A sandwich combo...off of the adult menu (he'll want you to know that).  He was so excited to graduate from the kid's menu to the regular menu, because "the adult menu has alot more delicious choices."  And he ate everything!  Yikes!  Will ordered the 6 piece nugget kid's meal, instead his usual 4 piece meal, and he ate all of his lunch, too!  So, the eating me out of house & home has begun...

Tuesday, February 22

Today at gymnastics, Ms. Ema not only stamped both hands, but Will's tummy, too!  He thought it was so funny to be able to play peek-a-boo with his belly to show me.  But what I love is that he still has his soft & pudgy toddler tummy.  {kiss, kiss...Mom-my! Don't you wish that soft & pudgy was just as adorable on a 40 year old woman?!?!

Wednesday, February 23

In his Valentine's basket, Will got a little stuffed Mario and Yoshi.  He loves them!  Here is Mario riding on Yoshi's back like he does in Super Mario Bros Wii.  They are now apart of the family of lovies that have to sleep with him at night.  Today, Mario & Yoshi went to school because Will's good buddy Brody "needed to see them."  Thankfully, Mario & Yoshi made it home safely, and Will said they had a wonderful time at school in his school bag!

Thursday, February 24

Went to Kroger today, and...OH MY WORD, GROCERIES ARE EXPENSIVE!!!!  Last week, green peppers were 75 cents each; this week, $1.39.  The asparagus was $3.99/lb.  Talk about sticker shock!  I mean, seriously?  SERIOUSLY?!?!

Friday, February 25

I worked hard at the gym today: an hour of yoga, an hour of strength training, and a 2 mile run on the treadmill.  I left the gym shattered, but proud.  And the endorphin rush was nice!

Lordy, Lordy...

I am well loved!  (And 40, too!)

Last night, Brent and I were talking about my birthday and he said that he and the boys had "big plans...BIG PLANS!"  I inquired if it was big plans like the guy in the AT&T iPhone commercial or truly big plans.  And we laughed.

But indeed, he did have big plans, and the day has been fabulous!  Brent and Jack left the house this morning with much fanfare under the guise of  "going to the office to work."  Before they left, Brent came back into the bedroom and said for me not to get out of bed until he came back into the room.  Now I am the mother of 2 young children...you don't have to tell me twice to spend the morning lounging in bed!  Will was left behind to keep me company, and we said goodbye to Daddy and Jack as they left for work.  Will climbed up into bed to snuggle with me and promptly proceeded to spill all of the birthday secrets.  Hahaha.

And about an hour later....
  Breakfast in Bed!

Cheesy scrambled eggs, boudin, fresh mango, sectioned grapefruit, and a pumpkin spice latte.  To show how much I am loved, Pumpkin Spice Lattes are a seasonal drink and aren't currently on Starbuck's menu, but because Jack & Brent know it is my favorite, they asked Starbucks to make one especially for me!  So sweet.

I LOVE tulips!  The yellow ones just make me smile.

While we were all enjoying breakfast together, Brent and I were reminiscing about how long we have known each other, and all of the life changes that have happened this last decade.  Brent commented that he remembered when his daddy turned forty and that he was about Jack's age at the time.  Will, out of the blue said, "Yeah, first you're one, then two, then three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten and then-- BAM!-- FORTY!"  Brent and I fell out laughing because our 4 year old had so precisely (and unknowingly!) captured our thoughts and emotions.  It was the first of many STOP!!  DROP!! and ROLL on the floor laughing out loud moments today with Will.  He is such a mess.

After brunch, we all got ready to go on a quest to find my birthday present...a new bed for our bedroom.  Back when Brent and I were in graduate school, I fell in love with this beautiful plantation bed by Bernhardt.  At the time, we were as poor as church mice and there was no way we could afford the bed nor would it have fit into our little apartment.  But all these years later, I still love that bed and haven't seen anything else that I love more.  So when Brent asked what I wanted for my fortieth birthday...a trip, a party, jewelry...I said I would love to find the Plantation Bed (king size, of course!).

We spent the afternoon "test driving"  mattresses.  We have spent the last few years sleeping on a pitiful, pitiful mattress, so it was very important to spend the money and get a good quality mattress.  My back appreciates it very much.  We found the perfect mattress and I'll order the bed this week.  And then, of course, we'll need new nightstands, new bedding, a new paint color on the walls, probably new carpet.....  Y'all see where all of this is heading?!?!?  I'll have a new master bedroom by the time it's all over!  Poor Brent, please keep him in your prayers.

After we bought the mattress, we headed over to the Home section of the store to pick up a mattress cover at a reasonable price (Ha, the mattress salesman let us in on  little secret that virtually the same cover sold in the mattress section is sold over in the Home section for half the price.  Nice to know!!!).  While we were looking at the selections, an elderly couple was waiting patiently behind us for their turn.  Will, being Will, turned around and said to them completely out of the blue:  "My Mommy has a secret..."  Of course, at this point, both Brent and I turned around very quickly to hear exactly what "Mommy secret" was about to come out of our precious four year-old's mouth.  As petrified as we were, you should have seen the look on this sweet old couple's face.  In fact, I think both of them were already starting to blush before Will blurted out:  "She's FORTY!!!!"  Without missing a beat, the little old lady said "Well, I would love to be as young as your Mommy."
All afternoon, my email has been flooded with birthday wishes--thank you, thank you, thank you!  I have felt the birthday love!  We closed out the birthday celebration with sushi and dessert, and I'm so full I am about to pop.

I feel so blessed to have 3 boys who have spent the entire day not only telling me, but showing me, how much I am loved.

Happy 40th Birthday to me!  As my 88 year old grandmother reminded me, it sure beats the alternative!!

A Peek at our Week 2011: Week 7

Saturday, February 12

We had a great time at the Train Show!  We learned about the different types and scales of trains, and the advancements in the model train industry.  But the most striking observation was that train shows are a multi-generational event.  We saw more grandfathers, fathers, and grandsons together, and it was wonderful.  What was particularly heartwarming was the number of grandfathers I saw holding grandbabies while explaining about the trains and their mechanical workings.  Making memories that will last a lifetime!

Sunday, February 13

The weather today was beautiful!  Almost makes me hopeful that spring is around the corner.  Brent worked in the yard and has declared it "spring ready".  We pulled out the bikes for the first time this year, oiled them up, adjusted the seats for winter growth spurts, and they were off!  We rode down to the neighborhood playground to swing, play and soak up some vitamin D!  Crossing my fingers that warmer days are ahead.

 Monday, February 14

When they're teenagers and we're uncool, I want to remember that at one point in their lives, Brent and I were awesome!

Tuesday, February 15

Ouch!  As we were leaving the gym and heading to gymnastics class, Will tripped (while running) and face planted into the floor.  My first instinct is to check the teeth, and they appear to be okay.  But the lip and the forehead...not so much.  We decided to skip gymnastics and instead Will snuggled with his lovies while watching TV in bed.  Poor little fella!

Wednesday, February 16

It was Grooming Day today, and around here, a certain someone HATES to have his nails clipped.  There is much drama involved.  D.R.A.M.A.  You would think I was cutting off his actual toes!  So, I tend to put it off for as long as I can, until I really look at his toenails and realize they will be cutting a hole in his sock if we don't clip them soon.  So today was the day.  And, surprisingly, he, who shall not be named, did really well.  Very little drama.  Maybe we are turning a hygiene corner?

Thursday, February 17

When Jack got in the car this afternoon, he said "It's 70 degrees outside!  It's the perfect day for ice cream!"  What a terrific idea.  Jack enjoyed coffee chocolate chip and Will loved his chocolate!  I was proud of myself for resisting the temptation of the pistachio.

Friday, February 18

It is always a treat for Will and me to have lunch with Jack at school.  Today, we celebrated Jack's half birthday (or 2/3 birthday to be exact!) with his friends.  Everyone loved the cookie cake and there was enough sugar to jack them up for the rest of the afternoon.  (ha!)  Jack has discovered my blog, and sometimes decides to pass on making an appearance in pictures.  But these two cute friends were happy to guest star with the birthday treat.  Thanks Ashley and Nolan!  Happy 2/3 Birthday, Jack!

May the Force Be with You

A week or so ago, Gramma sent Jack and Will these   Star Wars Heroes and Villains Cookie Cutters

They are so cute & fun and the boys couldn't wait to use them.  I promised them that I would get cookie dough and we would make them, and darn if those kids didn't remember!  Let me just state for the record that cooking with kids is not my most shining moment.  The little hands reaching, touching and grabbing everything, the mess...

So, I got some cookie dough...

I hope you weren't thinking that we were going to make cookie dough from scratch.  That would have just sent me over the edge.  Did I dream this, or isn't there cookie dough that comes in sheets (like pie crusts) that you can unfold and start cutting out cookies?  I couldn't find it at Kroger's, but really, wouldn't that be a dream?!?!

Anyway, we made due with this.  The three of us mashed all of the preformed cookies together to make a ball of dough, and then (heart palpitations) had to get out the flour to roll the dough out.  Two boys + an open container of flour = disaster!  At one point, Jack grabbed a fistful of flour and started to walk away from the table.  I nipped that in the bud right quick!

We got the dough rolled out and it was time to cut out the cookies.

Now, aren't these cute?

Yoda, Boba Fett, Stormtrooper and Darth Vader

The moment Jack and Will had been waiting for...

eating the leftover dough

{tisk, tisk}  Pillsbury, Pillsbury, Pillsbury...

But that is the best part!

11 short minutes later, Tah Dah!

They looked good, but had spread some in the oven causing them to lose the sharpness of the stamped details.  Any way to prevent the spreading?  Was the dough too thin?  Please advise.

We bypassed the elaborate decorating as shown on the box, because, please people!, I would have been in hysterics.  But maybe next time?

Yeah, probably not!

Will's Valentine Party

Will and his classmates had a fun Valentine Party!

There's a successful formula for a preschool party:

a light lunch of heart-shaped sandwiches, cheese crackers, and fruit kabobs,

a yummy cupcake treat,

making a simple craft,

and, of course, playing with friends!

Happy (belated) Valentine's Day!

All Aboard

Friday evening, Brent began telling the boys that he was taking them for a surprise adventure on Saturday morning.  Well, curiosity was killing them!  Jack and Will played 20 questions trying to guess where we were going.  They never guessed correctly, but the excitement was palpable as we set off for our adventure!

Where were we going?!?!  To the Model Train Show!

We loved all of the train displays that the different model train clubs set up.  I was amazed at all of the intricate details used to set up the towns or countryside for the train to travel through.

Although I really knew nothing about model trains before today, I discovered that my favorite trains were the O scale (1:48 in relation to the real thing).  The O trains and accessories were a nice size for viewing and the train sounds were very realistic.  Here is an O train display:

One of my favorite parts of the display are the M&M cars; I'm sure if we ever had a train set that Will would insist we have a candy car.

This was Will's favorite train, the steam locomotive.  It was cool...realistic sounds, lots of smoke, and it was fast!  We watched this train for quite some time.

Then we discovered the N scale displays.  Brent's favorites were the miniature N trains (1:160).  They were small, but had such amazing details.  I loved playing with the macro lens of my camera capturing all the fine details of these scenes.

This is what the N train displays looked like without the zoom.

And then I zoomed in on the scenes using the macro lens.

Uh oh, a fender bender!  The lights on the fire engine and the police car really flashed.  That Coke truck is too cute.  And the people waiting for the train were unbelievably tiny...steady hands needed to place those.

I loved the little suitcases ready to be loaded onto the train second only to the conductor with his hands in his pockets.

Don't you wonder what he is taking a picture of?  Or where the couple in the convertible is going?

This was our absolute favorite feature of the N train displays...Stone Mountain!  The details were dead on; from the carving in the side of the mountain, to the people lounging on the lawn waiting for the laser show, to the sky buckets that actually went up and down the mountain, to the fence around the top of the mountain so that you don't fall off!  Amazing!

At every display, there were "Do Not Touch" signs.  Jack and Will were so good; they resisted the temptation to investigate with their fingers.  Then, as if a reward for all of those well behaved children, there was an interactive train display!  You could drive the trains or watch the vignettes come alive by pushing the button on the side of the display.

Here is Jack controlling the parachutes at one of the amusement park rides.

The boys call this vignette "Zoo Atlanta".  I call it charming.

But I have saved the best for last...Jack's favorite display!  The Lego Train Club set up a Lego train that traveled around a Lego replica of Atlanta.  If we had the room at our house, I would love to do something like this with all of Jack's Legos.  What I loved the most was that the Club added motion to the scenes whenever possible.  So Cool!

The Lego Georgia Dome, site of the 2013 Alabama v Miami Chick-fil-A College Kickoff game.  I know this because the trash talking has already begun at our house!

What'll ya have?  What'll ya have?  Drive on down to The Varsity for a Frosted Orange; they are delicious!

I loved this school and playground!  The swings and the merry-go-round actually moved!

This carnival was fun, too.  The spider ride went round & round and up & down, just like the real ride!

A tribute to my second home.

One last shot of my sweet boys enthralled with the trains.
